Routeros cloud hosted router11/9/2023 ![]() ![]() They’re pretty capable, although they do have a bit of a learning curve, and things like firewall configuration aren’t exactly new-user friendly, although there is a default configuration for NAT and a DHCP configuration wizard that cover probably 99% of the typical home deployment. I work for an ISP that uses exclusively Mikrotik equipment. I'm looking for a good learning experience for myself, but it has to work for everyone else in the house that simply isn't interested beyond working internet. I'm happy to consider other solutions with justification as to why, but pfsense and mikrotik have a good recommendation and seem to fit the bare needs that I'm after, with the options to customise it much finer than what I've used in the past with basic consumer routers. Anything other good plugins to consider would be great to know about. I've seen pfsense has extensions/plugins as well, such as geoblocking, its own DNS forwarder (and other features comparable to a PiHole/unbound) and was wondering if there were available in some fashion in an RB4011. Being able to set a fallback DNS in case the PiHole goes down would be fantastic as well.Īn easy setup for wireguard would also be great as well. I know you can set it up to be the DCHP server, but it's another device to go wrong and break the network. Work with conditional forwarding on a PiHole - The more specific it can get the better, my current router from my ISP does a decent job of this, but a vast majority of the queries are listed as coming from the gateway rather than the devices. I'd also like to have UPnP for the same reason. ![]() ![]() The customisation is great, but pointless if it is punishing to get anyone else up and running. It needs to be transparent to novice network users - doesn't need any setup to add a new device to the network (which I believe is possible with anything with DCHP). My ISP is an Australian NBN HFC connection with a PoE connection, but I want PPPoE should I need it in the future. I like the prospects of the flexibility of pfsense, but the value and quality of the switches from Mikrotik for the same or less price is compelling despite the higher learning curve I'm having a hard time deciding whether I should set up a mini PC with pfsense or a mikrotik router with routeros for my home network based off my needs.įor pfsense, my consideration is this HUNSN mini pc, and for routeros a Mikrotik RB4011. ![]()
